Tourism is now considered as industry because infrastructure development ,skill development, environment are linked to its space considering that it accelerates growth through enhancing employment. On the otherhand ,eco-tourism is adjusted accordingly with an eye to achieve sustainable development. Tourism emphasizes the best utilization of natural resources of a country. If pro-poor growth strategy is added to the developmental process in tourism, if educational curriculum is added to its institutional growth,if international tourism is correlated, if social security is provided, then tourism can contribute a lion’s share in the economy in the national income.
Indian tourism sectors are lacking in so many areas stated above. On the contrary, Indian states are not giving any priority except some important tourist destinations. In India tourism contributed 6.88% of GDP during 2012-13 ( Rs 1548989 crore) and this industry will grow at the rate of 8.8% per year from 2011 to 2021. International tourists in India grew at the rate of 5.9% in 2013 compared to 4.3% in 2012.The world travel and tourism council reported that tourism has contributed 7.3% in world economy in 2014.India is far behind from that figure. This is because of Indian communication system, hoteling system, transportation facility are very much underdeveloped than other OECD countries.Besides, the climatic condition is not suitable for the rapid expansion of tourism in India than other European nations. One important factor is the issue of health where in every tourist destination , the medical facility is too poor to nourish the tourists in India.
Not but the least , Indian Government has no concrete tourist policy that can enhance sustainability in the national economy as well and can contribute much in the GDP.Indian tourism industry may be called sick industry if these existing policies continue last long.
